Swiss unleaded petrol tops two francs per litre again

The average price of unleaded 95 petrol in Switzerland has risen above two francs per litre for the first time in almost four years, SRF reported. It now stands at 2.02 francs per litre, five centimes more than a week ago.

The price of diesel has also increased by five centimes, reaching 2.27 francs per litre, according to the Touring Club Switzerland.

The club attributed the increases partly to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and reduced refinery capacity. Several refineries in the Persian Gulf and Russia have been damaged in recent months. Low water levels on the Rhine have also raised transport costs.

The cost of inland shipping between Rotterdam and Basel has risen from 33.50 to 240 francs per tonne in just over a month. The Rhine level at Kaub in Germany is currently only 31 centimetres. Shipping would be easier at around 200 centimetres, while restrictions begin below 120 centimetres.

Despite the latest increase, fuel prices remain below their 2022 peaks. Unleaded 95 reached 2.31 francs per litre at the time, while diesel rose to 2.40 francs.

The Touring Club Switzerland does not expect prices to fall significantly in the short term, citing the geopolitical situation, limited refinery capacity and transport problems.
