Wolf remains authorised for cull in Mühlviertel

A wolf in the Peilstein area of Rohrbach district will remain authorised for culling for another nine days, ORF reports. Hunters have been asked to watch for the animal and shoot it if they spot it, but the hunt has so far proved difficult.

Wolves have been sighted repeatedly in the Mühlviertel region. Earlier this week, one animal appeared twice near Reichenau im Mühlkreis and is believed to have been close to a farm.

Agriculture provincial councillor Michaela Langer-Weninger of the ÖVP said action was necessary when wolves lose their natural fear of people and stay near residential areas.

Since July 2023, authorities in Upper Austria have been allowed to order the culling of so-called problem or risk wolves when they pose a specific danger to people or cause damage.

Eleven wolves have been authorised for culling by the authorities over the past three years. Only two have actually been shot, both in 2023.
