Recent rain has brought little relief from this summer’s drought, and Salzburg firefighters continue delivering water to farmers and their animals, ORF reports.

Fire brigades across the state are responding to water shortages, using tanker vehicles to supply households and farms with urgently needed utility water. Some volunteer crews make several trips a day, delivering thousands of litres.

The reported number of callouts ranges from four in Maria Alm in the Pinzgau region to 18 in Adnet in the Tennengau region.

State fire brigade commander Günther Trinker said the transport and work provided by the fire service are free of charge. The operations are subject to strict conditions, however, because the vehicles may carry only utility water. Drinking water cannot be delivered for hygiene reasons.
