Bavaria, Berchtesgaden Alps, mountain accidents

A 76-year-old hiker died after falling about 100 metres on the Rinnkendlsteig mountain trail in Schönau am Königssee, BR reported. The cause of the accident remains unclear.

Police said the man was hiking with companions on Wednesday when he fell in the Berchtesgaden Alps. His companions called emergency services after the accident.

The mountain rescue service could only confirm the man’s death. He was from the Rosenheim district. A helicopter recovered his body and flew out his companions, who were later supported by a crisis intervention service.

The Rinnkendlsteig runs from Königssee to the Kührointalm along the eastern side of the Kleiner Watzmann. The demanding trail offers views down to Königssee and, because of hazards including falling rocks, is recommended only for experienced hikers with secure footing.
