Fuel prices in Tyrol’s valleys are significantly higher than in Innsbruck, according to a survey by ORF and the Tyrol Chamber of Labour. The largest differences were found in the Stubai, Zillertal and Ötztal valleys.

The chamber compared prices at several filling stations between the end of June and mid-August. At the end of June, the average price in the Stubai Valley was 19 cents per litre higher for diesel and 15 cents higher for Super 95 petrol than the average in Innsbruck.

After ORF Tyrol and other media reported on the differences, the average fuel price in the valley fell sharply, the chamber said. Employee representatives said this showed a clear timing link between public criticism and the subsequent reduction in the price gap.

The survey was then expanded to the Ötztal and Zillertal valleys, where fuel was also more expensive than in Innsbruck. The chamber is calling on fuel providers and the federal competition body to explain the so-called valley surcharge. Such large price changes within a short period cannot be justified, it said.
