Vorarlberg rejects truck toll on state roads

Vorarlberg will not introduce a truck toll on its state roads in 2027, ORF reports. Transport councillor Christof Bitschi of the FPÖ and Economic Affairs councillor Marco Tittler of the ÖVP said on Wednesday that placing additional burdens on businesses and residents would be the wrong approach.

A toll on state roads would weaken Vorarlberg as a business location and ultimately affect the population, Bitschi and Tittler said. Companies instead needed relief, planning certainty and competitive conditions.

Vorarlberg was pursuing a sensible transport policy focused on efficient, well-developed roads rather than imposing new charges on businesses, the two councillors said. They added that the state stood for a strong economy and functioning transport infrastructure.

Burgenland plans to introduce a user fee for heavy vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes on three state roads from the beginning of 2027. An annual vignette is expected to cost between 650 and 1,000 euros.
