Klagenfurt residents back safer walking and cycling routes

More than 1,000 residents took part in a survey on Klagenfurt’s future mobility plan, ORF Kärnten reported. The city is now preparing a sustainable mobility concept, which is due to be submitted to the city senate for approval in autumn.

By the end of 2027, all state capitals must draw up a strategic plan for sustainable mobility. The survey was conducted online in spring and asked residents what they wanted to see in the city.

The main demands were safer routes for pedestrians, attractive cycling infrastructure and more green space in the city centre. Planning councillor and Deputy Mayor Ronald Rabitsch said measures were needed to improve the city’s quality of stay, including tree planting, greening projects, better cycling infrastructure and a master plan for walking.

Residents rejected the construction of new roads and instead called for existing roads to be renovated. A large majority also opposed the planned Ostspange road construction project in eastern Klagenfurt.

Rabitsch said the concept was being finalised by the city’s specialist departments before it would be submitted. Klagenfurt wanted to be a pioneer in the City Mission and position itself as a city of the future, he said. The project could also qualify for financial support through European Union projects.
