Tram works cause 45-minute delays on Vienna’s Brünner Straße

Roadworks on tram tracks have caused severe traffic disruption on Brünner Straße in Vienna’s Floridsdorf district since Tuesday morning, with drivers facing delays of up to 45 minutes, ORF reported.

The tracks are being renewed at the junction of Brünner Straße, Shuttleworthstraße and Lundenburger Gasse, an important intersection near the ramps to and from the Nordbrücke bridge.

Drivers can no longer travel from the Nordbrücke to Brünner Straße in the direction out of the city, or from Shuttleworthstraße to the Nordbrücke. The resulting congestion was so severe that police took over traffic control and adjusted the traffic-light sequence.

Wiener Linien said the traffic arrangements had been reviewed and approved by MA 46. The operator said it usually takes several days for traffic to settle after a change, adding that the situation at construction sites is monitored continuously and adjustments are made where possible.

The tram-track works are scheduled to continue until the end of August. Drivers are advised to avoid the construction zone by a wide margin.
