Eisenstadt to open recyclable biogas plant in October

Eisenstadt will open a fully recyclable biogas plant in October, according to ORF. The city says the project is unique in Europe and will convert municipal organic waste into electricity and heat.

The plant is being built at the municipal works yard and consists of five stainless steel containers. It is designed to operate largely without odour. Organic waste from household biowaste bins will be mixed with bacteria and heated to 37 degrees Celsius. The process releases methane, which is then used to generate electricity.

The plant is expected to produce about 400,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 180,000 kilowatt-hours of heat each year. The electricity will mainly power the works yard and charge the city’s electric buses, while waste heat will be used to heat the yard in winter.

Branches and tree cuttings will also be dried and used by Burgenland Energie for district heating. Surplus electricity will be fed into Raiffeisen’s regional energy cooperative.
