ORF reported that Vienna police have arrested two men suspected of carrying out a series of burglaries using nitric acid to corrode door locks and enter apartments.
More than 20 such break-ins have been reported in Vienna since the beginning of the year, in the districts of Landstraße, Wieden, Favoriten, Meidling, Margareten and Döbling. Police suspected a group operating across Europe.
Further investigations led officers to a Georgian group. Police monitored the suspects and arrested two men who had apparently just tried to break into an apartment in Vienna’s third district. Officers later found traces of a break-in at the building that had been caused by corrosive acid.
The Vienna State Criminal Police Office is continuing its inquiries. The two Georgian men, aged 42 and 39, remain in police custody.
