Vienna has introduced a new one-way system on part of Neubaugasse, ORF reported, reversing traffic direction between Burggasse and Siebensterngasse to reduce through traffic and create more space for pedestrians.
The change follows an evaluation of the street’s 2020 redesign. The city monitored traffic volumes over several months, assessed how people used the street and surveyed residents and businesses. The redesign was broadly rated positively, with 50 percent more people walking there than before.
Access to the northern section of Neubaugasse will now run via Kirchengasse and Siebensterngasse. The southern section will continue to be accessed via Westbahnstraße. Bus route 13A will remain able to use Neubaugasse in both directions, while the stop for route 48A will be moved closer to the street.
According to a traffic forecast, the change is expected to reduce through traffic by about 62 percent in the northern section and 21 percent in the southern section. Removing the turning lane from Burggasse into Neubaugasse will create a wider pavement, while four new trees will be planted there and three more in Siebensterngasse.
The evaluation found that 83 percent of surveyed residents were very or fairly satisfied with the redesign, and 77 percent said they felt more comfortable since the 2020 changes. Among surveyed business owners, 68 supported further sustainable street redesigns.
The city said the latest measures are intended to support and preserve these developments while improving the street’s appeal for walking and traffic safety.
