Heat and demanding routes can place significant stress on the cardiovascular system, Upper Austrian broadcaster ORF reports. The Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Klinikum Kirchdorf hospital is offering advice on how to prevent cardiac emergencies while hiking.

Steep ascents and high temperatures increase the strain, particularly for people with existing heart conditions or those who overestimate their fitness. Warning signs such as pressure in the chest or shortness of breath should be recognised and taken seriously.

“Hiking is an excellent way to do something for your health, provided you know your limits,” said Thomas Mark, head of internal medicine at the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Klinikum Kirchdorf.

Preparation is key

Good preparation can help prevent cardiac emergencies. Choosing a suitable route and realistically assessing one’s physical ability are essential.

People with risk factors such as high blood pressure should seek medical advice. Staying hydrated and taking breaks are particularly important to avoid overexertion.

React quickly to symptoms

Anyone experiencing symptoms should stop exercising immediately and call emergency services. First aid should be given if someone becomes unconscious.

“You should plan your hike carefully, pay attention to your body’s signals and turn back in good time if in doubt. This allows hiking to remain a safe and healthy way to combine exercise and nature,” Mark said.
