A 26-year-old man was seriously injured after crashing his e-scooter into a police car while fleeing officers in Vienna’s Simmering district late Saturday, ORF reported.

Police had tried to stop the Austrian man on Simmeringer Hauptstraße because he was travelling at excessive speed on a cycle path. Instead of stopping, he continued riding, prompting officers to pursue him with flashing lights and a siren.

The man accelerated to more than 60 km/h before suddenly turning around in Anton-Mayer-Gasse and riding towards the pursuing patrol car. When officers stopped their vehicle to get out, he lost control of the e-scooter and collided with the car.

The impact threw him to the ground. Vienna’s professional emergency medical service treated him at the scene before taking him to hospital.

Police confiscated the e-scooter because its maximum permitted motor output and design speed meant it was not authorised for use on public roads. The 26-year-old was reported for several traffic offences.
