A 16-year-old riding an electric scooter fled police in Vienna’s Döbling district on Friday afternoon, hit and injured a pedestrian and was later seriously injured in a crash, ORF reported.
Police tried to stop the teenager because he was riding illegally on the pavement of Heiligenstädter Straße. He drove away, with officers following in a police car using blue lights and a siren.
During the escape, he failed to see a 48-year-old woman emerging from a building entrance. The collision knocked her to the ground and injured her.
The teenager continued riding at high speed before crashing while entering the track area. Emergency medical teams treated both him and the woman before taking them to hospital.
Police confiscated the electric scooter, which had a 700-watt motor and could reach speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour. The vehicle was not approved for use on public roads.
The 16-year-old was reported on suspicion of intentionally causing serious bodily harm and under traffic laws.
