Police in Lower Austria have provisionally seized 154 cars since March 2024 for serious speeding offences, ORF reported. The latest case involved a 20-year-old driver in Wiener Neustadt on Thursday night.
The woman was driving at 112 km/h in a 50 km/h zone when police detected her speed. Officers stopped her, temporarily took her driving licence and reported her to the municipal authorities. Police also provisionally seized the car she was driving.
She is not the only driver in Lower Austria to face the measure this year. According to current figures, police have provisionally seized 45 cars since January because of serious speeding violations.
Stricter penalties since March 2024
Under stricter penalties introduced in Austria in March 2024, a vehicle can be seized if a driver exceeds the speed limit by more than 80 km/h in built-up areas or by more than 90 km/h outside them, such as driving at 220 km/h on a motorway.
If the driver already has a relevant previous conviction, seizure and forfeiture can be imposed for exceeding the limit by more than 60 km/h in built-up areas or 70 km/h outside them.
Most of the money raised if the vehicle is later auctioned goes to the Road Safety Fund. The remainder goes to the relevant regional or local authority.
