Austria seeks its best tree climber at Leibnitz championships

Austria’s tree-climbing championships are taking place this weekend in Leibnitz, with 47 tree-care professionals competing in five disciplines, ORF reported.

The event is being held in Leibnitz town park to draw attention to the profession. Competitors work at height among branches and ropes, where trees are their workplace.

The disciplines are throwline, speed climbing, ascent climbing, rescue from the tree crown and work climbing. In the rescue event, participants must retrieve a dummy representing an injured colleague.

Judges assess how elegantly and safely the competitors complete the tasks. Chief referee Karl Kramler said he has the final say in cases involving issues such as a forgotten safety device, dropped equipment or other safety concerns.

The four best climbers from Saturday will qualify for Sunday’s final, when Austria’s new tree-climbing champion will be decided.

Organiser Mariella Smith said spectators can expect plenty of action. Children and adults will also be able to take part in a secured “Ninja” challenge, a dexterity competition held on a tree.
