Truck fire closes S1 for more than three hours

A truck fire closed the Wiener Außenring expressway between Leopoldsdorf and Rannersdorf in the Bruck an der Leitha district for several hours on Friday morning, ORF reported. The closure was lifted around midday.

The truck caught fire shortly after the Leopoldsdorf entrance at about 8.30 a.m. The flames had been extinguished by shortly before 9.30 a.m. A total of 41 firefighters from Leopoldsdorf and the Vienna professional fire brigade responded.

Authorities were informed after vehicle fluids spilled. The S1 was initially closed in both directions while crews worked at the scene. Traffic was diverted via the Tangente and the A4 motorway, causing several kilometres of congestion.

The burned-out truck had to be recovered. According to ORF’s traffic desk, drivers faced delays of up to 45 minutes. Alternative routes, including through Maria Lanzendorf in the Bruck an der Leitha district, were also affected.

The carriageway towards Vösendorf reopened shortly before 9.30 a.m., while the opposite direction remained closed until around noon. Police are still investigating the exact cause of the fire.
