Fatal crash closes Seelisberg Tunnel indefinitely

Swiss broadcaster SRF reports that a fatal crash has closed the Seelisberg Tunnel between the cantons of Uri and Nidwalden in both directions.

At about 3 a.m., a vehicle with Uri licence plates collided with the tunnel’s southern portal for reasons that remain unknown. The motorist, who was travelling north, died at the scene. Authorities are working to identify the person, Uri cantonal police said.

The tunnel infrastructure was seriously damaged, and it is not yet known how long the closure will last.

Cars must use the Axenstrasse on the other side of Lake Lucerne. The Touring Club Switzerland recommends that travellers from the Zurich or Basel regions use the San Bernardino route to reach southern Switzerland. The same applies in the opposite direction. Heavy goods vehicles must use the San Bernardino route.
