Pilot project develops heat protection for Styrian kindergartens

A pilot project is developing child-friendly measures to protect kindergartens and crèches from heat in four municipalities in southeast Styria, ORF reports.

The project is being carried out by the state of Styria and the KLAR! region Netzwerk Südost in Fehring, Kapfenstein, Riegersburg and Unterlamm. Energy consultants have already analysed the buildings, and initial measures and materials are being introduced.

The materials include an illustrated picture showing ways children can cool down, drink properly and avoid direct sunlight. Songs and drinking posters are also being provided. A central element is a heat meter that shows children the current heat level.

Staff are receiving training on measures that can make a significant difference, including airing rooms early in the morning, adjusting daily routines and redesigning gardens.

The next stage will focus on technical changes such as shading and building adaptations. The project team also plans to create a toolbox with simple behavioural guidance and educational materials that kindergartens can use independently. For technical questions, the state’s energy advice centre will provide support to municipalities and facilities.

The full results and analyses of the pilot project are expected in autumn.
