Barcelona test match triggers ticket frenzy in Basel

The FC Basel and FC Barcelona friendly has sold out within minutes, with overloaded servers and tickets offered for hundreds of Swiss francs on resale platforms, SRF reported. The match at St Jakob Park on Sunday has sparked intense demand in Basel and beyond.

When the remaining tickets went on general sale on Monday, the FC Basel online ticket system was overwhelmed shortly after launch. The club stopped the sale, increased its server capacity and then started a new sales attempt.

The club said it had expected strong demand because of Barcelona’s appeal, but that the actual interest had “clearly exceeded” expectations. The ticketing infrastructure had been prepared for a very high number of visitors, the club said, but the exceptionally large number of simultaneous accesses created a particular challenge.

Requests came not only from Basel and elsewhere in Switzerland, but from numerous countries across Europe. Fans have since tried to find tickets through internet forums and Facebook groups. According to BZ Basel, even the Penya Blaugrana de Basel, the officially recognised Barcelona supporters’ club in the region, failed to secure tickets. The club has about 45 active members and regularly travels to Barcelona matches across Europe.

FC Basel also expects heavy traffic around St Jakob Park on match day. It is urging visitors to use public transport where possible and to arrive early, as long queues are expected at the entrances.

At the same time, tickets quickly appeared on resale platforms for several hundred Swiss francs. FC Basel warned against buying on the black market or through other sales platforms because tickets could be fake or invalid. The club said it could block such tickets and was examining additional measures to prevent resale, including sending the QR codes required for entry only on match day.

The clubs are also linked by Hans “Joan” Gamper, a prominent figure in football history who played for FC Basel at the end of the 19th century before founding FC Barcelona in Barcelona. He became the club’s first captain and later served several times as its president. Claims that Gamper adopted Barcelona’s blue and red colours from FC Basel have not been conclusively established.

The interest in the friendly reflects Barcelona’s status as one of the world’s best-known football clubs. Fans hope to see players including Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha, although it remains unclear which prominent players will take part. FC Basel said it was looking forward to a sold-out football festival at St Jakob Park.
