Klagenfurt man loses high five figure sum in online scam

A 69 year old man from Klagenfurt lost a high five figure sum in an online scam after unknown perpetrators claimed they could recover money he had previously lost, ORF reported.

Between July 4 and 13, the alleged money recovery company contacted the man and told him he was listed as a fraud victim in a foreign register. The perpetrators said they could recover his money and promised to invest it profitably.

After the man initially transferred a low five figure amount, the perpetrators set up what they described as a trust account. A low five figure sum was then deposited into the account on his behalf, but he could not access it.

The unknown perpetrators subsequently demanded further transfers. The man complied and ultimately transferred a high five figure sum.

He contacted his bank, which identified a possible fraud, and then reported the case to police.
