Police stop speeding drivers and illegal racers in Upper Austria

Police in Upper Austria stopped two drivers travelling at nearly twice the permitted speed through roadworks and broke up an alleged illegal street race, ORF reported.

At about 11 p.m. on Wednesday, a 27-year-old British national was recorded travelling at 162 km/h through roadworks on the Welser Autobahn at Marchtrenk in the Wels-Land district, where the speed limit is 80 km/h. Police were carrying out speed checks at the location and stopped him immediately. His driving licence was confiscated.

A short time later, a driver from Romania was also stopped after travelling through the roadworks at 158 km/h. Both men will be reported to authorities.

At the same time, a 23-year-old Afghan national from Linz and an 18-year-old Romanian were allegedly racing illegally on the B1 road at Leonding in the Linz-Land district. Police following them by car found that they were travelling at more than 140 km/h in a 70 km/h zone.

Both drivers also face reports to authorities and the withdrawal of their driving licences.
