Fire at waste disposal company mobilises 16 fire brigades

A fire involving a large quantity of wood waste at a waste disposal company in Mettmach in the Ried district triggered a major emergency response early Thursday, ORF reported. The flames threatened to spread to nearby storage halls.

The first fire brigades were alerted shortly after 1 a.m. The blaze, visible from a distance, involved mostly wood from old furniture. As it spread rapidly, reinforcements were requested and the highest alarm level was declared.

A total of 16 fire brigades attended the operation. Fire crews also faced difficulties securing enough water. Several farmers from the surrounding area brought supplies in slurry tankers.

By about 6.30 a.m., the fire was largely under control, but extinguishing work was expected to continue until the evening, district fire brigade commander Jürgen Hell said.

The Red Cross also attended with one vehicle. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
