Cable fire disrupts Vienna commuter rail all day

A cable fire near Praterstern station in Vienna has caused severe disruptions to commuter rail services that are expected to last all day, broadcaster ORF reported. The fire broke out overnight and has since been extinguished.

Rail infrastructure and technical systems were damaged and are being inspected and repaired, ÖBB spokesperson Judith Winder told ORF Vienna. No commuter trains are currently running between Wien Praterstern and Wien Quartier Belvedere, or between Wien Rennweg and Vienna Sankt Marx.

ÖBB staff are at the affected stations to help passengers find alternative routes. Replacement buses are operating between Wien Mitte and Geiselbergstraße. Rail services will not resume fully today, Winder said. Tickets are also being accepted on affected routes operated by Wiener Linien.

The disruption also affects the City Airport Train to Vienna Airport. Passengers are advised to use a long distance train from Vienna Central Station or the Vienna Airport Bus instead.
