Hiker dies after fall during descent in Admont

A 32-year-old man from Graz died on Monday after falling during a hike in Admont, in the Liezen district, ORF reported. He is believed to have suffered fatal injuries during the descent.

The man had stopped at the Admonter Haus, a mountain hut at an altitude of 1,725 metres in the Gesäuse. At about 3.15pm, he began descending towards the valley via the Goassteig trail.

He was travelling alone and did not reach his accommodation. Police said the circumstances of the fall were still being investigated and might never be fully established. There was no evidence that anyone else was involved.

After the man failed to arrive, the hut owner and his parents alerted emergency services at about 10.15pm. Hut staff found him lifeless below the trail around midnight. An emergency doctor could only confirm his death.

A rescue helicopter transported the body to the valley. The operation involved 16 members of the Gesäuse Alpine Rescue Service, two emergency doctors, two alpine police officers and two police patrols.
