Vorarlberg police fleet totals 269 vehicles, including 1966 mopeds

The Vorarlberg state police directorate has 269 vehicles for operations on roads, on the water and in the air, ORF reported, including four Puch VS 50 D mopeds acquired in 1966.

Volkswagen accounts for 170 vehicles, or 63 percent of the fleet. The largest group is the VW Transporter, with 78 in service, while 39 vehicles are Tourans. Caddy models are also used as unmarked police cars and can carry radar equipment for checking vehicle speeds.

The police also operate 55 Skoda vehicles, mainly Kodiaq and Octavia models. The fleet includes 12 Audis, comprising A3, A4, A5 and A6 models, as well as four vehicles made by the Spanish manufacturer Cupra.

Two of the four Puch mopeds are still in use for tasks such as document checks and messenger trips, according to the state police directorate. The other two are displayed at the police museum in the Museumswelten museum complex in Frastanz.

The fleet also includes a MAN lorry for transporting materials, an Iseki compact tractor used by the caretaker of the police school in Feldkirch Gisingen, and a Scania bus for transporting groups of police officers or police trainees.

In addition, the directorate has 14 police motorcycles, including BMW and Honda models. Two off road trial bikes are mainly used for motorcycle riding safety training, according to the directorate.

Most police vehicles are leased for three years, allowing officers to use newer vehicles. Leasing costs for the entire fleet amounted to 2.05 million euros in 2025. The response to a parliamentary inquiry by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said 239 vehicles are currently covered by leasing contracts, while 35 are owned by the police.
