Police arrest suspect after armed robbery at Vienna Dorotheum

Police have arrested a suspect after an armed robbery at a Dorotheum branch in Vienna-Währing, ORF reported. Investigators identified the man through DNA traces found at the scene.

The suspect was arrested overnight into Monday, according to a report initially published by Krone. He was reportedly known to police. Further questioning is still under way.

The man entered the branch masked and armed at about 3 p.m. on Thursday. The four employees managed to escape. He took jewellery from display cases but abandoned it when the first police units arrived and fled.

The employees gave matching descriptions of the suspect, while investigators also reviewed surveillance footage.

Police sealed off the area around the branch for several hours. Units from Vienna’s city police commands, the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, the Vienna Traffic Department and the Vienna standby unit were deployed, along with specialist teams including the police dog unit, WEGA and Cobra. Cobra officers later carried out a coordinated search with support from a service dog.
