Chamber of Labour outlines travellers’ rights when holidays go wrong

Austria’s Chamber of Labour has reminded travellers of their rights when flights are delayed, baggage goes missing or hotel construction disrupts a holiday, ORF reported.

Under European Union law, all types of package travel are protected. Price increases are prohibited shortly before departure. Travellers also have the right to cancel if natural disasters, political unrest or health risks affect the trip.

If travellers are forced to stay at their destination longer than planned, the tour operator must cover up to three additional hotel nights.

Passengers whose flights are cancelled or delayed may be entitled to compensation. Delayed or lost baggage should be reported immediately to the airport’s lost and found office.

If the actual trip does not match what was booked, travellers should photograph the problems and contact the tour operator without delay, said Anja Haider Wallner, the state councillor responsible for consumer protection.
