A 17-year-old local man suffered life-threatening injuries in a moped crash near Schwendau in the Zillertal on Saturday evening, ORF reported. The 15-year-old local girl riding as a passenger was injured to an unspecified extent. Neither was wearing a helmet.

The pair were travelling towards Mayrhofen on a regional road at about 10.45 p.m. when the rider veered off the road to the right on a slight left-hand bend and hit the kerb. The moped then slid 25 metres along the pavement, throwing both occupants into an adjacent field.

The girl remained conscious, while the rider lay motionless. A woman who happened to be passing alerted emergency services.

The rider received initial treatment from an emergency doctor and rescue workers before being taken to the shock room at Innsbruck Clinic with life-threatening injuries. The passenger was taken to Schwaz Hospital.
