A 39-year-old man led police on a chase on the Western Motorway near Salzburg overnight into Sunday, reaching 225 km/h in a 100 km/h zone, ORF reported.

The man was spotted shortly before midnight by an unmarked police patrol in Wals, in the Flachgau district, because of his aggressive driving and excessive speed. He ignored police attempts to stop him and drove onto the Western Motorway towards Vienna.

He later exited at Salzburg-Mitte at about 200 km/h and struck a roadside guardrail at a roundabout. Neither the driver nor his passenger was injured.

The man did not have a driving licence. Police could not seize the car because it was a leased vehicle. The driver said he had borrowed it because he intended to buy it.

He will be reported to the public prosecutor’s office on multiple counts of endangering physical safety.
