Union criticises persistent pension gap in Styria

Women in Styria will have received almost five months less in pension payments than men by the end of 2026, ORF reported on Equal Pension Day. From 9 August, men will have collected as much in pensions as women receive over the entire year.

Helga Ahrer, women’s chair of the Austrian Trade Union Federation in Styria, said the pension gap did not begin in retirement but on the first day of working life.

She said low pensions were neither inevitable nor the result of personal failure, but reflected structural shortcomings, insufficient childcare, involuntary part-time work and low-paid sectors dominated by women. The consequences become visible decades later when people check their pension accounts, she said.

Union calls for expanded childcare

Ahrer also rejected calls to undermine the state pension system. “The intergenerational contract is alive; the young finance the old,” she said, adding that today’s pensioners had built the foundation for prosperity.

The union is calling for comprehensive, free, full-day childcare; more staff to support family members who provide care; higher minimum wages and salaries in typical women’s professions; and a legal right to increase working hours to full-time employment.
