Walmendingerhorn cable car rebuild doubles capacity

ORF reports that a new cable car is being built at almost 2,000 metres in the Kleinwalsertal valley, replacing the roughly 60-year-old Walmendingerhorn aerial tramway. The project is expected to cost around 30 million euros.

About 50 construction workers are currently working at the mountain station. Project manager Dominik Scholz of Kleinwalsertal Bergbahnen said favourable weather had allowed work to progress quickly.

Materials produced during the demolition and construction work will be reused on site, avoiding unnecessary transport, according to the company.

The new cable car is intended to provide modern access, with step-free travel from the car to the cabin and from the mountain station further up the mountain, said Andreas Gapp, a board member of Kleinwalsertal Bergbahnen.

Capacity will also increase significantly. Each cabin will carry up to 65 people, compared with 32 currently. The new cable car is scheduled to open around Christmas.
