Police arrest two men after separate alleged rape cases in Vienna

ORF reported that police arrested two men in connection with separate alleged rape cases in Vienna. In the first case, a 42 year old man was arrested after allegedly raping a 33 year old woman in his apartment in the Meidling district on Friday morning.

Police said the woman had met the acquaintance over outstanding money and followed him to his apartment after initially hesitating. He allegedly threatened her verbally and raped her. She then grabbed a kitchen knife, escaped and called police.

The woman waited outside the apartment for officers. Police found the man inside, where he behaved aggressively. Vienna police special unit WEGA was called in to assist and arrested him. He allegedly continued to act aggressively in custody and damaged his cell, requiring officers to restrain him again before placing him in a security cell.

The woman was taken to hospital for an examination. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office, South Branch, is conducting the investigation. Police said the alleged victim and suspect are believed to be connected to the drug scene.

Second case involved alleged attack in bushes

In a separate incident in Meidling overnight on Thursday, a man allegedly followed a 27 year old woman and pushed her into bushes on Schneiderhangasse. He allegedly choked her while she was on the ground.

The woman shouted for help and fought back. The attacker then fled after taking her mobile phone. Police said extensive and rapid investigations by the South Branch of the Vienna State Criminal Police Office led to the arrest of a 40 year old Romanian national at Alaudagasse station on the U1 line within a few hours.

Police spokesman Markus Dittrich said the man did not confess during questioning. He had facial injuries caused by the woman’s resistance. On the orders of the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office, he was taken to a correctional facility. The investigation is continuing.
