Vienna has extended late opening hours at four outdoor pools through August 16 because high temperatures are expected to continue, ORF reported on Saturday.
The Kongreßbad in Ottakring, Laaerbergbad in Favoriten, Brigittenauer Bad and Strandbad Alte Donau are currently open until 8.30pm. Bathing ends at 8pm. The hours are aligned with dusk, the city said.
The extended opening hours had originally been scheduled to end on August 9. “The high temperatures continue to place a major burden on the people of Vienna,” Climate and Baths Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky of the Social Democratic Party said. Many people were seeking protection from the heat at the outdoor pools, he said.
ORF’s weather forecast shows temperatures remaining partly well above 30C in the coming days. The next peak of the heatwave is expected on Monday, with temperatures reaching up to 36C. A drop to around 30C may follow from Wednesday.
