Two forest fires break out in Salzburg’s Lungau

Two forest fires have broken out in the Lungau region, ORF reported. A fire was discovered on Friday evening in very steep and inaccessible terrain in the Riedingtal valley near Zederhaus. Another was reported early Saturday near Moosalm, about eight kilometres away.

Firefighters have been working in the Riedingtal since the early morning. Their first priority is to extinguish the fire discovered on Friday, as emergency crews could not reach the steep terrain that evening. Ground teams joined the operation on Saturday.

About 50 firefighters are involved. The fire sites are difficult to access, and a police helicopter is supporting the operation because the second location cannot currently be reached from the ground.

Lightning strikes are believed to have caused the fires.

Lungau firefighters had already been dealing with a forest fire in recent days. Following severe storms on Thursday, several hundred square metres of forest caught fire in Hintergöriach.
