Klagenfurt city festival expects 70,000 visitors

Klagenfurt’s 30th Altstadtzauber city festival opens on Thursday evening, with about 70,000 visitors expected over the next three days, ORF reported. The security plan includes measures for extreme heat and possible severe weather, while families with children are also expected to attend.

Organiser Stefan Lindner said the festival would use proven measures against vehicle attacks, including concrete anti-terror barriers arranged to prevent vehicles from building up speed along long straight stretches.

In cooperation with Klagenfurt’s professional fire brigade, organisers will also install a spray-mist system that visitors can walk through to cool down. Additional shaded areas are planned, and the Red Cross is prepared to respond to heat-related incidents.

The organisers have also prepared for storms. If severe weather approaches, announcements from the stages will instruct visitors to leave the festival grounds. Underground car parks, churches and other buildings will serve as “safe havens” where people can shelter.

The festival is being promoted beyond Carinthia, including in Styria. Several days ago, members of the Stadtrichter organisation travelled to Graz by Koralmbahn train to invite people in the city centre. Burggraf Willi Noll said visitors from Graz could reach Klagenfurt by train in 45 minutes.

The festival will cover Klagenfurt’s entire old town, featuring 140 artists and 25 bands. Its programme includes cabaret, magic, clowns, entertainers and music ranging from folk music to jazz.

A flea market will again collect donations for people and families in need.
