Salzburg expects another heavy travel weekend

Another busy travel weekend is expected in Salzburg, ORF reports, with a second wave of holiday traffic heading south from Bavaria and Baden Württemberg in Germany and increasing return traffic towards Germany. Saturday is expected to be the busiest travel day.

Last weekend, traffic on the Tauernautobahn A10 was already backed up for an hour from the Salzburg interchange at 5 a.m. The Karawanken Tunnel at the Slovenian border later saw delays of up to two hours, while traffic also built up in the Italian Canal Valley towards Udine.

To limit diversion traffic along the A10, the full closures at the Kuchl and Golling exits in the Tennengau district will again apply to local residents as well as other motorists. Between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., entry and exit ramps will be blocked with barriers. Drivers heading to Kuchl on Saturday will have to leave the motorway in Hallein.

A 100 km/h speed limit will also apply between Salzburg and the St Michael toll station in the Lungau district. The measures also include overtaking bans for lorries weighing more than 7.5 tonnes and cars with trailers weighing more than 750 kilograms, as well as a Saturday ban on transit lorries.

Summer holidays end on Sunday in three German states, which is expected to increase return traffic. Delays are likely, particularly near Werfen in the Pongau district. Traffic metering is highly probable in front of the Helbersberg Tunnel between Werfen and Golling. Conditions are not expected to ease until Sunday afternoon at the earliest.
