Vienna awareness teams handle more conflicts during hot summer nights

Vienna’s awareness teams have handled about 11,000 conversations since mid-May, around 10 percent more than during the same period last year, ORF reported. The mobile teams provide low-threshold support and intervene in crisis and conflict situations in public places before they escalate.

The trained staff assist people who feel overwhelmed, do not want to intervene themselves, feel uncomfortable, or experience discrimination, sexual harassment or racist abuse. Support is available from team members on site or by phone.

The teams are particularly busy during the current heatwave, as more people spend their evenings outdoors. Popular destinations include the Danube Canal, Karlsplatz, Stadtpark, the area around the Ring and the Wientalterrasse. Crowds can also lead to conflicts.

On hot days, the teams provide water and first aid in cases of excessive alcohol consumption. They operate on Fridays, Saturdays and evenings before public holidays from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. throughout the summer months.
