Bavaria, thunderstorms, weather warnings

The German Weather Service is warning of severe thunderstorms in parts of Upper Bavaria and Swabia on Wednesday evening and during the night into Thursday, BR24 reported.

Storms moving in from the southwest could bring locally intense rainfall of around 30 litres per square metre in a short time, hailstones measuring two to three centimetres and severe gusts of about 100 kilometres per hour.

The DWD warned of a risk to life from lightning. Falling trees, damaged high-voltage lines and scaffolding, and large objects being blown around are also possible. Other potential impacts include damage to buildings, roofs being torn off, flooding on roads, in underpasses and basements, aquaplaning, local landslides and hail damage.

Thursday is expected to be hot again, with temperatures reaching 31 degrees Celsius across Bavaria. It could also be humid, particularly in the south, where showers and sometimes severe thunderstorms are forecast.

More relief is expected on Friday. Showers and thunderstorms during the night could bring temperatures down to between 10 and 17 degrees, while daytime highs are forecast to reach 29 degrees. The risk of forest fires in Bavaria remains in place for now.
