Germany’s weather service is warning of locally severe thunderstorms in parts of Bavaria during the night into Wednesday, BR24 reported. The areas most affected are expected to be in the southwest, Swabia and Upper Bavaria.
Thunderstorms moving in from the south could bring intense rainfall, hail and severe squalls with wind speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour. The German Weather Service, or DWD, said up to 30 litres of rain per square metre could fall in a short time, along with hailstones measuring around two centimetres.
The DWD warned of a high risk of lightning, as well as falling trees, branches and objects blown by the wind. High-voltage power lines and scaffolding could be damaged, while buildings could also be affected and roofs stripped.
People were advised to avoid staying outdoors. Flooding is also possible on roads, in underpasses and in basements.
